“That was regrettable. It was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters seated near me,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “There was a large group of Dallas supporters—not New York fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with excitement for the Dallas team.”

He further emphasized that the signal was entirely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I just showed the wrong finger,” he noted. “It was inadvertently performed. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got corrected rapidly.”

League Precedent for Owner Fines

This is not the first time an league proprietor has been penalized for misconduct. Recent examples include:

• Panthers owner David Tepper was penalized $300K for tossing a beverage at fans in January 2024.
• Then Tennessee Titans proprietor Adams was issued a $250,000 fine in 2009 for a comparable obscene gesture.

Jones, a figure who is known for his publicity flair, reportedly has an approximate wealth of around $16bn, making the fine manageable for the billionaire owner.
